Toxicology is the study of the harmful effects of poisons and other toxic substances on living things. There are components of environmental science, chemistry, pharmacology, and biology all within the field of toxicology. It aims to identify, analyse, and minimise the impacts of hazardous chemicals by better comprehending the processes through which they cause harm to organisms.
Toxic substances can originate from both natural and man-made sources. Natural sources include plants and animals, while man-made ones include industrial chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and environmental contaminants. Toxic chemicals are harmful to living things because they interfere with normal cellular and tissue function, as well as organ function. Long-term consequences on health, such as cancer and reproductive issues, are also possible from exposure to toxic compounds.
Toxicologists investigate how poisons affect living things, from the cellular to the ecological level. They use many different ways to figure out how dangerous a drug is, like trying it on animals, studying it in cell cultures, or making a computer model of it. Furthermore, toxicologists investigate how chemicals in the environment and the human body interact, as well as the processes of absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion.
Toxicology is crucial in preventing harm to the general population. Toxicologists are scientists who study the effects of harmful chemicals on human health and who try to detect, assess, and mitigate such effects via the use of various control measures. This can include making rules and laws about how toxic substances can be used and thrown away, as well as coming up with ways to track and find toxic substances in the environment.
Forensic science and drug development are only two such fields where toxicology play crucial roles. Toxicologists work in the field of forensic science and utilise their understanding of poisons to establish whether or not a person's sickness or death was caused by contact with a poison. Toxicologists work in the pharmaceutical industry to investigate potential harmful side effects of new pharmaceuticals and provide safer alternatives.
